The collision sent both aircraft spiraling into the ground in a fiery explosion, killing everyone on board.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-7\"><\/div>\n<p data-start=\"1614\" data-end=\"1805\">The tragedy unfolded on Veterans Day, a holiday meant to honor military service. What was intended as a patriotic showcase of vintage aircraft quickly became a scene of chaos and disbelief.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1807\" data-end=\"1976\">Spectators could be heard gasping and screaming as debris scattered across the airfield. He logged more than 34,500 flight hours and had been flying since the age of 10. His passion for aviation was inherited from his father, a World War II bomber pilot.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2379\" data-end=\"2673\">\n<p data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2673\"><strong data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2397\">Terry Barker<\/strong>, a retired American Airlines captain and U.S. Army veteran, lived in Keller, Texas. Known for his warmth and dedication, he served his community long after leaving the cockpit. \u201cIt\u2019s definitely a big loss for our town,\u201d said\u00a0<strong data-start=\"2623\" data-end=\"2652\">Keller Mayor Armin Mizani<\/strong>. \u201cWe\u2019re grieving.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2674\" data-end=\"2907\">\n<p data-start=\"2676\" data-end=\"2907\"><strong data-start=\"2676\" data-end=\"2689\">Curt Rowe<\/strong>, of Hilliard, Ohio, served as a crew chief on the B-17 and was a member of the Ohio Wing Civil Air Patrol. His brother-in-law described him as \u201cin love with WWII aircraft\u201d and deeply committed to preserving history.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2908\" data-end=\"3034\">\n<p data-start=\"2910\" data-end=\"3034\"><strong data-start=\"2910\" data-end=\"2922\">Len Root<\/strong>, another Keller resident, worked as a commercial pilot and served as a manager for the CAF\u2019s Gulf Coast Wing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3035\" data-end=\"3170\">\n<p data-start=\"3037\" data-end=\"3170\"><strong data-start=\"3037\" data-end=\"3054\">Kevin Michels<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3059\" data-end=\"3072\">Dan Ragan<\/strong>\u00a0were also longtime aviation enthusiasts who volunteered countless hours at CAF events nationwide.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3172\" data-end=\"3307\">\u201cThese men weren\u2019t just pilots,\u201d said Coates. \u201cThey were historians, educators, and patriots keeping the memory of World War II alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3314\" data-end=\"3357\"><strong data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3357\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingmag1.b-cdn.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2024\/03\/52499480016_5f334e086f_k.jpg\" alt=\"NTSB Releases Docket for Fatal Wings Over Dallas Airshow Midair\" \/><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 data-start=\"3314\" data-end=\"3357\"><strong data-start=\"3318\" data-end=\"3357\">NTSB Begins Technical Investigation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3359\" data-end=\"3546\">The\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3363\" data-end=\"3410\">National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB)<\/strong>\u00a0is leading the investigation into why both aircraft were flying at the same altitude and in the same airspace during the demonstration.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3548\" data-end=\"3743\">According to\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3561\" data-end=\"3591\">NTSB member Michael Graham<\/strong>, investigators are reviewing radar data, video footage, and air traffic control communications to reconstruct the events leading up to the collision.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3745\" data-end=\"4108\">Most of the debris remains on airport property and is being carefully analyzed. Although neither aircraft carried a flight-data recorder or cockpit voice recorder \u2014 devices commonly known as \u201cblack boxes\u201d \u2014 investigators recovered a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"3978\" data-end=\"4018\">GPS navigation unit from the fighter<\/strong>\u00a0and an\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4026\" data-end=\"4069\">electronic flight display from the B-17<\/strong>\u00a0that may contain valuable flight data.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4110\" data-end=\"4252\">\u201cThese devices may show GPS locations, altitudes, and airspeeds,\u201d Graham explained. \u201cWe\u2019re hopeful they can help us understand what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4254\" data-end=\"4369\">Graham also noted that the NTSB may consider recommending flight-data recorders for vintage aircraft in the future.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4376\" data-end=\"4422\"><strong data-start=\"4380\" data-end=\"4422\">Ongoing Concerns About Air Show Safety<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4424\" data-end=\"4655\">This tragedy follows other high-profile air show accidents involving WWII-era planes. In 2019, a\u00a0<strong data-start=\"4521\" data-end=\"4550\">B-17 crash in Connecticut<\/strong>\u00a0killed seven people, prompting calls for stricter oversight of restored warbirds used in demonstrations.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4657\" data-end=\"4829\">Vintage aircraft, while historically significant, pose unique safety challenges due to their age, design limitations, and the specialized training required to operate them.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4831\" data-end=\"5028\">The CAF has maintained that all pilots undergo rigorous training and vetting before being allowed to fly in shows.
