Her mother\u2014who developed hoarding tendencies after a cancer diagnosis\u2014filled the home with piles of belongings. The clutter became so overwhelming that the children often slept on Costco trifold gymnastics mats in the living room because their bedrooms were unusable.<\/p>\n

The man she believed was her biological father worked two jobs just to support the household. Only after her mother died did she learn he wasn\u2019t biologically related to her.<\/p>\n

Her interest in acting began after watching Harrison Ford in\u00a0Star Wars: Episode IV \u2013 A New Hope<\/em>, shortly after her mother survived breast cancer.<\/p>\n

It was her mother who aggressively pursued a Hollywood career for her, convinced that her daughter\u2019s success could lift the family out of financial hardship.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think my mother wanted me to have a better life than she had,\u201d she later said.<\/p>\n

She began acting professionally in 2000 at just eight years old, debuting on the sketch-comedy series\u00a0Mad TV<\/em>.<\/p>\n

By her teenage years, she had become the primary financial provider for her family \u2014 but fame came with a cost: relentless pressure, scrutiny over her appearance, and the feeling that she was never enough.<\/p>\n

Her mother, Debra, passed away in 2010 after her cancer returned \u2014 a loss that left her emotionally adrift. Therapy eventually became a lifeline as she attempted to navigate grief, trauma, and unhealthy coping habits, including excessive drinking and toxic relationships.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor years, I dreaded showers\u2026 whenever it was that I started feeling uncomfortable that Mom still showered me,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Five years after her mother\u2019s death, she stepped away from acting completely. She understood she needed to break free from her mother\u2019s ambitions to discover who she truly was.<\/p>\n

Writing became her outlet. Her memoir,\u00a0I\u2019m Glad My Mom Died<\/em>, was published in 2022 and quickly became a New York Times bestseller.<\/p>\n

In it, she revealed that until she was 17, her mother performed invasive vaginal and breast \u201cexams,\u201d claiming they were medical checks. She also recalled her mother doing nothing when she was served alcohol or pressured into bikini photos as a teenager.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was the hardest part of the book for me to write,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n

Now in her 30s, she has created a life defined by independence rather than expectation.<\/p>\n

Her podcast explores themes of self-growth, mental health, and healing, and fans admire her not only for her talent but for the courage she has shown in transforming trauma into empowerment.<\/p>\n

That child star with the burdened smile is Jennette McCurdy.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get how complicated his role was,\u201d she told BuzzFeed. \u201cMy mom had this long affair, had three children that weren\u2019t his\u2026 I imagine the timing of her cancer played a part in him sticking around.\u201d<\/p>\n

She later identified her biological father as a jazz musician named Andrew. They eventually met and kept in contact for several months.<\/p>\n

Today, she says Hollywood \u201cexploited\u201d her childhood \u2014 and did so knowingly.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy whole childhood and adolescence were very exploited,\u201d she told The New York Times. \u201cThere were people who meant well and didn\u2019t know better. And there were people who knew exactly what they were doing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She recalls her mother staying silent when \u201cthe Creator\u201d offered her alcohol, and failing to intervene when she was pressured into posing in a bikini. Instead, her mother would remind her, \u201cEveryone wants what you have.\u201d<\/p>\n
