Legendary Singer Is Retiring From Touring Permanently

It is often said that all good things eventually come to an end, and this applies to the careers of some of the most beloved singers of our era. Sadly, we have more news to share, and this time it concerns the retirement of a renowned pop icon.

Johnny Mathis, now 89 years old, has been captivating audiences for many years. Regrettably, he has decided to retire after his performances this summer, citing challenges related to aging, including memory decline.

Currently, Mathis is participating in the Voice of Romance Tour, which was planned to continue through the spring. Any performances that were set for June 2025 or later have already been canceled.

In a statement, it was mentioned: “As many of you may already know, Johnny Mathis is nearing his 90th birthday this year. Therefore, it is with deep regret that we announce his retirement from touring and live concerts due to Mr. Mathis’ advancing age and memory challenges that have intensified.”

There are still a few shows left in Pennsylvania, Indiana, and California. The last concert is planned for May 18 in Englewood, New Jersey. His team has stated that any canceled shows will lead to refunds for ticketholders, which will be processed at the point of purchase.

Born in 1935 in Texas and raised in San Francisco, Johnny Mathis has been a significant figure in American music for many years, celebrated for his romantic and smooth vocal style.

He started singing at a young age and quickly gained recognition for his remarkable talent. Additionally, he excelled as an athlete in track and field. When he decided to pursue music, a demo he recorded caught the attention of a Columbia Records executive, leading to his signing in 1956.

Some of his most famous songs were ‘Chances Are’ and ‘It’s Not for Me to Say’. He also put out one of the earliest greatest hits albums, marking a significant moment in music history. He spent an impressive 490 consecutive weeks on the Billboard charts.

Mathis has sold over 350 million records globally and has released around 70 albums. Beyond his musical achievements, he has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Great American Songbook Hall Of Fame.

May he rest in peace.
